Emma Peine, a resident of Lastrup, died Feb. 2, 2009, at the HarmonyHouse of Pierz.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday at St. John’s NepomukCatholic Church in Lastrup with the Rev. Gerald Dalseth officiating.Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Emma Ann Girtz was born May 29, 1916, in Pierz Township, MorrisonCounty, to the late Theodore J. and Josephine (Bednar) Girtz. Sheattended country school. She was united in marriage to Joseph Peine,Jr. Feb. 18, 1935, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz. Thecouple farmed in Agram Township before moving to Lastrup where theycontinued farming. She owned and operated Ma’s Café in Lastrup formany years. She also cooked at various restaurants in the surroundingarea. In retirement, she enjoyed quilting, upholstered and mended formany. She also enjoyed dancing, playing cards, traveling, gardeningand her house plants. One of her favorite sayings was, “There isn’tanything I can’t fix.” She was a faithful member of St. John’sCatholic Church and the Christian Mothers. Emma knew a lot of peopleand if she didn’t, it didn’t take long for a new friendship to form.Years ago, her family lost count of the many quilts she made or thezippers she put in or the holes she patched. She truly lived her lifeto the fullest.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Leonard (Kathy) of Chaska,Bernie (Ellwood) Jacobson of Howard, S.D. and Randy (Linda) Peine ofCambridge, Wis.; son-in-law Jeron Kapsner of Lastrup; sisters LorraineGohl of Pierz, Celesta “Sally” Meyer of Pierz and Marie and (Jim)O’Donnell of California; 17 grandchildren and many great andgreat-great-grandchildren.

Emma was preceded in death by her parents; husband Joseph (1976);daughter Gladys Kapsner; sister Betty Olson and brother Herbert Girtz
